Award-winning video PSA series simplifies Montana's voting process for voters statewide
With the state’s election season in full swing, AARP Montana released its “How to Vote” guide to help voters understand key deadlines, requirements, and options for casting their ballot in the upcoming general election.
The Immense Power of the Older Montana Voter
Voters age 50-plus are expected to remain a powerful voting bloc in Montana elections, consistently turning out at higher rates than younger voters. In the 2024 election, for example, 58.1% of the electorate was age 50-plus.
“As AARP Montana has done in previous election cycles, we’ve created an online voter resource guide to help Montanans stay informed about important election deadlines and any changes to the voting process,” said Tim Summers, AARP Montana State Director. “Knowing when, where, and how to vote can be challenging, and we want to make participation as easy as possible, especially for older Montanans. Voters age 50 and older have consistently made up a majority of Montana’s general election electorate, and we expect that trend to continue in 2026. This guide is designed to help voters navigate the process with confidence and make their voices heard.”
Montana Voting Guide simplifies Montana's voting process
The Montana voting guide includes information on how to register, vote absentee, and what identification is required at the polls. It also provides resources to locate polling places, view sample ballots or download a voter registration application. The guide will continue to be updated throughout the election season to reflect the most current information.
In addition, AARP Montana is promoting its award-winning “How to Vote” video PSA series, which helps break down Montana’s voting laws into a simple, easy-to-understand format. The series has received national recognition, earning a Gold Viddy Award, Gold Hermes Creative Award and a Gold DotComm Award.
“Simple can sometimes be both elegant and powerful,” said Summers. “This PSA series helps explain complex voting procedures by distilling Montana's voting laws into clear, straightforward steps that voters can follow with confidence.”
The series includes three short videos:
- How to Register to Vote in Montana’s 2026 General Election
- How to Vote by Mail in Montana’s 2026 General Election
- How to Vote in Person in Montana’s 2026 General Election
“Voters have many options when it comes to casting their ballot,” Summers added. “AARP wants to make sure they understand what those options are so they can make their voice heard.”
What to know about voting in Montana
Montana voters should be aware of several key considerations heading into the 2026 election cycle:
- Updated legislative district maps may impact which candidates appear on a voter’s ballot depending on their residence.
- A 2023 law requires voters previously registered in another county or state to provide prior registration information when registering in Montana. The law also makes it a crime to register in Montana while knowingly registered in another state.
- The Montana Supreme Court struck down several 2021 voting restrictions, maintaining same-day voter registration and certain absentee ballot practices.
