WEST YELLOWSTONE, Mont. – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and partner Jeffrey Contracting, LLC are improving several miles of U.S. Highway 191 (US 191), near West Yellowstone. The project will begin at the intersection of Yellowstone Avenue and US 191, extending north for approximately 9.6 miles toward Big Sky. The purpose of the West Yellowstone North project is to improve the roadway surface and enhance safety features. Construction is expected to start in mid-July and be completed in approximately one month, weather and other unforeseen factors permitting.
Planned project improvements include:
- Application of seal and cover (chip seal)
- Addition of new roadway signage with flashers
- Updated roadway striping
Chip seal is a cost-effective method used to protect and extend the life of the roadway surface. It involves applying a thin layer of asphalt to the road surface, followed by a layer of gravel or crushed stone. The gravel is then pressed into the asphalt to help seal cracks, prevent water from seeping into the roadway, and improve the driving surface.

During construction, drivers can expect temporary parking restrictions and lane closures, as well as flaggers directing traffic. The project team will reach out to area businesses in advance to inform them about upcoming parking restrictions.
