Oscar season is upon us, and moviegoers everywhere are in a time crunch to watch as many of this year's Academy Award-nominated films as possible. Unless you're a film critic, though, the chances are there's simply not enough time to watch all the movies on your list.
As far as the Academy is concerned, 68 percent of best picture winners were two-and-a-half hours or shorter. "Gone With the Wind" holds the title of longest best picture winner, with a runtime of 222 minutes.
None of the nine movies nominated this year will end up on that list, as the longest among them — "Manchester by the Sea" — runs at two hours and 17 minutes. Aside from the longest best picture winners, there are plenty of other great movies to watch if your schedule frees up.
To help make a selection, PrettyFamous, an entertainment data site by Graphiq, found the best movies with a runtime over two-and-a-half hours. Films are ranked according to their Smart Rating — a score out of 100 that takes into account a movie's IMDb rating, Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer and Audience Score, Gracenote rating, Metacritic Metascore and the inflation-adjusted U.S. box office gross.
Plenty of former Oscar darlings make the cut as some of the 100 best long films, including best picture winners "Schindler's List" (195 minutes) and "Lawrence of Arabia" (216 minutes). Get that extra-large bowl of popcorn ready and enjoy some of these movies that are well worth the time investment. Here are the top 25.
Note: Smart Rating scores are rounded to the nearest hundredth place, and there are no ties. Movie descriptions are sourced (with minor edits) from Gracenote.
