Crist, Kleppelid, Foster and Kotson collect state titles in long-course swimming
The Helena Lions Swim Team competed at the State Long Course Championships in Missoula on July 29-31 and retured with 12 state championships.
Capturing individual state titles at the meet were Makayla Crist (15-16 Girls: 100, 200 Free and 200 Back), Emma Foster (15-16 Girls: 400, 800 and 1500 Free), Kaitlyn Kleppelid (15-16 Girls: 50 Free and 50 Breast), and Peter Kotson (15-16 Boys: 800 and 1500 Free).
The 15-16 Girls, 200 and 400 Free Relays consisting of Kleppelid, Callan Blossom, Foster and Crist both won state titles as well.
Breaking HLST records were Emilyn Bauer (17 & Over: 50 Fly), Makayla Crist (15-16 Girls: 100 Free, 200 Free, 50 Fly and the 200 Back) and Kaitlyn Kleppelid (15-16 Girls: 50 Free).
Eight HLST swimmers, (Blossom, Emilyn Bauer, Nolan Bauer, Kotson, Foster, Crist, Libby Hardwick, and Kleppelid) will be joining other Montana swimmers to form the Montana Zones Team. They will compete in Clovis, Calif., at the Western Zones Championships on Aug. 9-13. HLST coach Kirk Ermels will be the head coach of the Montana Zones Team.
Commercial Bar places second at Goosetown Slowpitch Tournament
The Commercial Bar of Helena placed runner-up in the Womens C Division at the prestigious Goosetown Slowpitch Tournament in Anaconda recently. Commercial, which advanced to the championship after losing its opening round game and then reeling off seven consecutive victories in the losers bracket, lost to Spokane’s (Wash.) Sullivan Scoreboard in the chipper.
Molly Mills, Amanda Vischer and Ashley Hurt of the Capital City club were selected to the All-Tournament team. Mills led Commercial with seven home runs, followed by Christina Smetana and Bree Stonehocker.
The local group played good team defense overall, anchored by Mills at her left-centerfield position, shortstop Smetana, and Karissa Fenstermacher in left field. Aspen Herndon pitched every game in the tourney, going 7-2 in the circle.
