Helena Wrestling Club

Members of the Helena Wrestling Club traveled to Spokane, Wash., last weekend to open the wrestling season at the USAW’s Northwest Bigfoot Battle. 

It was the first event in USA Wrestling’s Folkstyle Tour of America series to determine USAW’s future Olympian Youth Rankings. Helena Wrestling Club had nine of its 11 wrestlers bring home hardware.

Zach Schroeck brought home the title at Novice 75 pounds in dominating fashion. He registered a pin and two 9-2 decisions on his way to the championship. 

Ridge Troupe started off the season by defeating two Washington wrestlers, pinning one opponent in 16 seconds and winning his championship match 8-6 to take the title at Intermediate 87 pounds. 

Other HWC placers include Noah Dear, fourth (Int 70); Isaac Romero, sixth (Nov 70); Dalton Snyder, fourth (Nov 95); Nicholas Kunz, fourth (MS 70); Seth Schroeck, fourth (MS 84); Noah Manibusan, sixth (MS 98); and CJ Snyder, third (MS 128).

Hockey

High School Bighorns

The Helena High School Bighorns traveled to Butte Friday night and took on the Copper City Kings, suffering the first of two losses over the weekend. 

The Bighorns took a 1-0 lead when Charlie Williams hit the net assisted by Matt Mohar. Butte evened the score to end the first period 1-1. Butte scored four goals in the second period and after a scoreless third period, the Bighorns fell to the Copper City Kings 5-1. Terry Gustafson faced 38 shots.

On Saturday, the Bighorns hosted the Copper City Kings at the Helena Ice Arena. Center Matt Mohar led the team with a hat trick. Nolan Davis and Jake Nelson each added one goal. Charlie Williams and Colter Sodja had two assists and Jerico Crouse, Nelson and Mohar each had one assist. Terry Gustafson had 20 saves. Helena lost 9-5.

The Bighorns are coached by Roy Marino, Jeremy Crouse and Brian Mohar. The Bighorns will host the Missoula Bruins on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and Sunday at 9:45 a.m. at the Helena Ice Arena. Admission is free. 

Basketball

Helena Shootout 

The Helena Shootout Youth Basketball Tournament will be held Jan. 21-22.

The tournament includes divisions for boys and girls teams in grades 5-8. There is a four-game guarantee for each team. Medals will be awarded to the first- and second-place finishers in each division.
