HELENA — Colin Gunstream and Darah Newell lead their respective divisions after Day 1 of the annual Helena City Golf Tournament on Saturday. Gunstream fired a 5-under par 66 at Green Meadow Country Club in the mens' tourney, while Newell shot a 2-under 70 in the womens' event.
Gunstream, who won the Bill Roberts club title earlier this summer, carded rounds of 3-under 32 on the front nine, and 2-under 34 on the back nine.
He holds a 4-stroke advantage over Riley Lawrence, who is sitting in second place with a 70.
Brandon Boka posted an even 71 and is in third, while Brady Kirkeby and Bennett MacIntyre are sharing fourth place, at 72 apiece. Next are defending champ Spencer Williams and Kelly Casey, tied for sixth with 73s.
Newell's round consisted of 3-under par 32 for the front nine, and a 1-over 38 on the back nine. Last week she captured her fourth successive GM club crown.
Andrea Tucker stands 12 shots back, with an 82.
In the Senior's tournaments, Jay Anderson shot a 71 in the mens' division, two strokes ahead of Gary Wilson's 73. Andy Anderson is sitting in third-place, with a 75, followed by K.C. Yahvah and Zach Pallister, six strokes out of the lead and tied fourth at 77 each.
On the women's side, Susan Court holds a narrow 2-shot lead over Julie Eggleston, 86-88.
The tourney concludes on Sunday, at Bill Roberts Golf Course.
