Chase Benson, one of Helena High’s most imposing modern-day football players, has committed to play for the Montana State University Bobcats.
Benson, a 6-foot-4, 235-pound defensive lineman, is a rare three-time all-stater, making honorable mention as a sophomore and first team his final two seasons.
This year, he led the Bengals with 22 hurries and was second with 16 tackles for loss, six sacks and 211 defensive points, despite missing several games due to injury and then playing limited downs upon his initial return.
“Chase is a very physical player and is a tenacious worker and a good all-around athlete,” Helena High coach Tony Arntson said. “He is definitely one of the all-time greats at Helena High.”
Benson leaves Helena High with career records of 51 tackles for loss and 76 hurries. Both marks were formerly held by Montana Tech All-American David Meis, at 39 tackles for loss and 65 hurries.
Benson is No. 2 on school’s list with 21 career sacks and 40 season hurries. He also ranks third all-time with 12 season sacks, 24 season tackles for loss and 697 career defensive points; is tied for fourth with six career fumbles caused; and is tied for seventh with 16 career deflected passes.
He is on pace to earn seven varsity letters at HHS -- three each in football and track and field, and one in basketball.
Last spring for Helena’s state championship track team, Benson placed fifth in the shot put at the Western AA Divisional meet with a heave of 48 feet. He posted a PR of 140-8 in the discus earlier in the season, as well.
In the weight room, the powerful Benson bench presses 345 pounds, can squat 435 and owns a PR of 325 pounds in the power clean. He also has been timed in the 40-yard dash in 4.8 seconds.
“Chase was a good team guy,” said Arntson, whose Bengals went 25-9 during Benson’s career, “and he was a big part of our success over the past three years.”
