Independents go 3-2 in Three Forks

The Helena Independents went 3-2 at the Roy McCauley Class B Legion tournament in Three Forks recently. Hunter Sickerson pitched a 2-hitter in a 6-2 victory over the Missoula Mavericks, with five strikeouts. Peyton Witham earned the win and Brady Anderson got the save in a 10-7 victory over Gallatin Valley; while Rudy Barkley kept the Great Falls Chargers at bay for 4-innings for the third win, 16-4. The Independents' two losses were by just 1-run, 7-6 to Belgrade and 3-2 to the Bitterroot Red Sox.

Offensively, eight of Helena's batters hit .300 for the tourney, including Evan Rankin, Sam Shepherd, Zach Spiroff, Kadyn Craigle, Seth Barrett, Ryan Barrett, Sickerson and Anderson. Matt Krieger and Seth produced five RBIs apiece.

Reps edge Bozeman 

In an error-plagued Class A baseball game at Kindrick Legion Field on Wednesday night, the Helena Reps shaded the Bozeman Spikes 9-8.

Helena led 7-2 after four innings, before Bozeman rallied for two runs in the fifth, and four in the top of the eighth stanza to knot the score at 8-all. But the Reps broke the tie with a run in their half of the inning, and then held on for the 1-run win.

The visitors committed six errors and Helena had five miscues, for a total of 11 errors in the game.

Helena out-hit Bozeman 12-8, led by Kellan Elder, Caeden Suero (RBI) and Riley Chisholm, with two hits apiece. Conor McCarvel posted two RBIs, while Jacob Howell rapped a double.

The hosts used four pitchers - Talon Burchard, McGurran, Matt Krieger and Nik Jemmings - with Krieger registering the win.

Sixth-year coach Jon Burnett's Reps are now 40-13 overall, for his third 40-win season. The Reps are 17-5 in conference play

HSHOF seeks nominations

The Helena Sports Hall of Fame is seeking individual candidates for the HSHOF. To receive a nomination form for an individual athlete, coach, official, administrator or sports fan, email The deadline to submit applications is September 15. State championship teams are being inducted automatically on a chronological schedule. The HSHOF has been in existence since 2003, and next year's banquet, which will be the hall's ninth class of inductees, is slated for July of 2017.
