Helena native Erika Ackerlund captured a win and a runner-up finish at two prestigious national triathlon events in Florida recently.

At Lake Louisa State Park on March 3, the University of Montana senior won the Clermont Sprint Triathlon American Cup for elite women, clocking a time of 1 hour, 42 minutes, 7 seconds. She swam the 1/2-mile leg in 10:52, biked the 12.4 miles in 33:03, and ran the 5K in 17:49.

Ackerlund — a former three-sport athlete for Helena High — then placed second on March 10th at the Sarasota-Bradenton CAMTRI Sprint Triathlon Continental Cup in the elite division.

She was clocked at 58:51, just eight seconds behind Stanford alum Chase Sophie, and first to finish in the U23 age group. Erika's splits consisted of 10:19 in the swim, 29:57 in the bike and 17:31 for the run. Ackerlund and Sophie were actually dead even to start the run.

Bruins Wrestling Club

The Bruin Wrestling Club won three titles and placed 17 wrestlers to finish 15th overall in the 88-team Montana AAU State Championships in Great Falls recently.

Winning titles for the Bruins were Cash Corbally at Novice 85 pounds, Zane McCormick at Cadet 182 and Seth Jensen at Elite 220. Placing runners-up were Rylan Stout (Bantam heavyweight), Cole Graham (N-95), Brady Armstrong (N-105), Noah Kovick (Cadet 145) and Leila McKay (Girls N-100). Dylan Graham (SB-140) and Josh Lee (E-195) each garnered third place medals.

Rounding out BWC's placers were Tristyn Gilliam, Marissa McKay, Cash Kipp, Chance Lee, Dane Butler, Traeton Duty and Jake Slagel.

Great Divide Ski Team

Members of the Great Divide Ski Team recently competed in the Northern Division Youth Ski League Championships for U14 and younger at Bridger Bowl Ski Area. More than 170 young athletes from clubs throughout Montana and North Dakota competed in Giant Slalom, a Technical Kombi and a Slalom race in three days of competition.

This was the last competition of the season for many of the athletes and they showed how well they have progressed as many had top ten and top fifteen results in their age class.

Giant Slalom: Girls; U10 – Maren Fox,14th; U14 – Morgan Hayes, 5th; Sydney Emmons,10th. Boys; U12 Garrett Hinderman, 19th; U14 – Charles Fox, 15th; Thomas Wahl, 23rd.

Technical Kombi: Girls; U14 – Morgan Hayes, 9th; Sydney Emmons, 12th. Boys; U14 – Thomas Wahl, 20th.

Slalom: Girls; U10 – Maren Fox, 11th. U14; Morgan Hayes, 6th; Sydney Emmons, 12th. Boys; U12 – Garrett Hinderman, 15th; U14 – Charles Fox, 17th; Thomas Wahl, 19th.

Some Great Divide athletes were selected to  Northern Division teams for regional postseason championship competitions being held in March. Two members of the U21/U19 age group; Witt Williams and Jake Aaberg are competing in the Western Region Championships held at Schweitzer Mountain Resort in Idaho.

Ethan Hayes was selected as first alternate for the U16 Western Region Championships being held at Alyeska Resort in Alaska. And Hayes and Levi Long were selected to the Northern Division team competing at the Tri-Divisional Championships being held at Snowbasin Resort in Utah.

Helena Wrestling Club

Helena Wrestling Club had 24 wrestlers participate in the Montana State AAU Folkstyle Wrestling Tournament in Great Falls this past weekend. 

Here are the top placers in their weight class: Ashlyn Eblen- 1st place, Taylor Lay- 1st place, Kate Downing- 4th place, Michael Smith- 5th place, Cannon Percival- 6th place.

Carroll moves softball doubleheader

The Carroll College softball team announced a venue and date change for this weekend's scheduled Cascade Conference series against The College of Idaho.

Because of field conditions, the Saints will host College of Idaho at the University of Montana Grizzly Softball Field in Missoula at 3 and 5 p.m. Sunday and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Monday.
