The Capital High volleyball team placed runner-up at the Great Falls Optimist Tournament on Saturday, while Helena finished third.
Capital won its pool on Friday and beat Flathead 2-0 in Saturday's semifinals, before dropping a 25-20, 25-14 decision to Billings Senior in the championship match. The Bruins finished 2-1 on the day, and stand at 6-1 overall after their first loss of the season.
Audrey Hofer led CHS with 44 assists and seven service aces on the day. Teammates Sarah Ashley spiked 15 kills, while Dani Bartsch posted 11 digs and Paige Bartsch had 7½ blocks.
Helena went 3-1 on the second day of the tourney, losing to Senior in the semis, and then besting Missoula Sentinel in the consolation finals 25-14, 25-16.
The Bengals were paced by Jamie Pickens with 37 kills and nine blocks, and Emily Feller's 59 assists and five aces. Vanessa Walsh and Amilia Stoner had 20 digs apiece.

Helena at Bozeman
The Helena boys placed third at the Bozeman Invitational Cross Country Meet with a score of 116 points. Bozeman won the meet with 29 points.
Helena's Jonah Fisher was the top-placing local runner, finishing in seventh-place with a time of 16:19. Sophomore teammate Trystan Brewer was Helena's No. 2 guy with a 16:46, ahead of Clayton Ryerson's 16:52. Next came Zane Roush and Sam Sullivan. All five Bengals scorers posted career PRs.
The Helena girls placed fourth with every scorer clocking under 20:40 and only 33 seconds separating their No. 1 and No. 5 runners. Kylie Hartnett spearheaded the group with a 20:07, followed by Katelyn McKay, in 17th and 19th overall, respectively. Next came Rylie Schoenfeld, Jasmine Wilkerson and Kylee Wetzel.
Capital's girls placed seventh, led by Zoe Wall in 21:05 and Nina Bracht-Bedell in 21:15. Ella Krumm was the No. 3 finisher. Jesse McMurtrey paced Capital's boys, running a 16:24 — just five seconds behind Fisher — and finishing ninth overall. Peter Lund ran a 17:22.
Townsend 20, Columbus 7
Townsend football defeated Columbus 20-7 on the road Friday, to remain undefeated at 3-0 on the young season. Bulldogs quarterback Tyson Racht ran for two touchdowns, for 1- and 2-yards, and threw for a third score for 52 yards to Kameron Rauser.
"After not playing very well in the first half, our kids showed a tremendous amount of character and poise to come back and play the way they did the second half," coach Travis Rauh said. "I'm extremely proud of the effort they gave and the way they finished the game."
Carroll volleyball wins
The Carroll College volleyball team defeated Embry-Riddle in a Great Falls tournament 25-18, 25-15, 23-25, 25-15. Brielle Baumgarner had 20 kills, Rayna Pilgeram had 38 assists and Ayla Carpenter had 18 digs.
Carroll soccer wins
The Carroll College women's soccer team defeated Whitman 3-2 on the road. Lizzie Sheldon scored all three goals
Bighorns win
The Helena Bighorns defeated the Missoula Junior Bruins 4-2 to go 2-0 on the season. Nicholas Noel scored two goals, while Kaden Lindberg and Elliot Plourde scored one each.
