Brock Coyle announced on Twitter Thursday afternoon that he will not return to football.
Coyle was a member of the San Francisco 49ers for the past two seasons, but had been on injured reserve since week one of the 2018 season when he suffered a fractured vertebrae during the season opener against the Minnesota Vikings.
Thursday he wrote, "Injuries are a part of this game and it is a risk all players willingly take when we step onto the field. Unfortunately, the injury I sustained last season is one that will prevent me from returning to the field again."
The Bozeman native spent five seasons in the NFL, two with the 49ers and three with the Seattle Seahawks.
49ers GM John Lynch released a statement regarding Coyle's release wishing him well and thanking him for his contributions.
According to his NFL.com player bio Coyle finished with 59 career tackles.
