Joe Epler Present LOOKING BACK By Curt Synness Fifty-three years ago, pitcher Rod Luck checked Bozeman on six hits, while shortstop Kirk Johnson and third baseman Dave Burton stroked three base knocks apiece, as Helena swamped Bozeman 11-3 in an American Legion baseball game on the road in 1966. The win boosted Luck’s record to 6-2, which was the top mark for a starting pitcher in Montana at that time. He didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning, and had a 3-hitter going into the Neil Horne ninth, when Bozeman erupted for two runs on three hits. Luck finished with five strikeouts. Johnson extended his hitting streak to eight straight games, with two singles, a double, and four runs batted in. The Capital City club took a 1-0 lead in the third frame, and then tallied four in the fourth, two in the eighth, and four more counters in the top of the ninth stanza. Left fielder Neil Horne aided Helena’s cause with a single, a double and two RBIs, while first baseman Joe Spoja posted a pair of ribbies.
