The current discussion on whether or not to allow open containers in the Downtown Helena area is a no-brainer. Simply put, it is a dumb idea! No one wants to shop after a few drinks and no store owner wants half-drunk people wandering around their stores looking at merchandise with a drink in their hand.
If you can't take a container in a store, where do the containers end up? On the street. You then have litter and spilled drinks, broken bottles and bodily waste. No one wants to take their family, friends or visitors into an environment like that. Larger cities have problems with groups of people gathering and drinking in areas they shouldn't. This is how gangs get started. Do we want that? Who is going to pay for the police and the cleaning crew?
