The July 4th IR published a Hobby Lobby ad arguing that the United States is “one nation under God” – presumably the Christian God. If so, how should our government function?

Jesus said that the greatest commandment is to love God. But, Jesus also said that his kingdom is not of this world. Thus, it would be incorrect to assume that a Christian nation would function as a theocracy.

Jesus said that the second commandment is like the first, “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Were the United States really a Christian nation, all public policy would align with that commandment and it could do so while also affirming the principle of church/state separation.

In a Christian nation there would be no tolerance for an attitude that Americans are better than anyone else; no tolerance for an economic system that disenfranchises many for the benefit of the few; no tolerance for a system that perpetuates multi-generational poverty; no tolerance for discrimination in any form; no tolerance for the abuse of neighbors seeking asylum in our country; etc.

We have a lot of work to do to live up to the myth that we are “one nation under God.”
