I want to acknowledge the efforts of Representative Moffie Funk and Helena Youth Against Gun Violence for introducing a bill in the legislature proposing a fine of $1,000 for failing to secure a gun. With the high rate of suicide in our state, particularly among young people, I thought that no effort would be too great to help ensure the safety of our children. I was wrong.

I work with children in the classroom, and the thought of a shooter taking any of these precious lives keeps me awake at night -- as it should all of us in Montana.

No one thing will be "the answer" to gun violence, but we must begin to do the small things that could save lives. No effort is too small. Keep talking, students, maybe eventually adults will listen.
