Helena has been billed as the "Best Little Art Town in the West." We do have an unusual amount of talented artist and galleries for a town this size. It certainly helps Helena stand out as something special. With this kind of promotion it is puzzling why it is OK to allow one of our most beautiful and visible pieces of public art to remain defaced year after year. I am talking about the wonderful wall mural on the south side of the Placer building in performance square. It depicts in lovely colors various scenes from our town and should be a source of collective civil pride, now it is the opposite.
Instead of tourists and residents admiring the artwork, what they see and comment on is the black paint defacing the art piece. This also includes other spray painting vandalism on the Gulch. Despite promises of restoration nothing has happen. Obviously, there are always barriers to fixing any problem, but long-standing inaction is also a decision that basically affirms that it is OK to vandalize our town and disrespect the artist that make it special.
We should be able to do better. Lets fix this.
