Ten years ago volunteers ambitiously began building vegetable gardens within walking distance of every neighborhood in Helena, forming a community to address food security issues. Out of these efforts, Helena Community Gardens (HCG), was born.
HCG would like to thank the community and our supporters for another successful growing and gardening season! This year we served over 170 households by providing gardening spaces at eight different community gardens throughout Helena.
In 2019, HCG will be adding a new garden, and with the renovation of the Bausch garden behind the YMCA, we will coordinate 10 gardens overall. Dedicated volunteers manage the gardens, and their rewards include introducing children to vegetable cultivation, rehabbing vacant lots, enhancing parks, and enabling individuals and families to provide organic produce for themselves and neighbors.
In addition to produce grown for their own consumption, HCG’s gardeners donated 6,318 lbs of organically grown vegetables to Helena Food Share in 2018.
We value our collaborations with Helena Food Share, Helena Parks & Rec, and several faith communities, and feel that our partnerships are measurably increasing the availability of nutritional and safe food in the Helena area.
