First it was Ted Kaczynski, then Rusty Weston, now Lloyd Barrus. All three suffer from delusional disorders. All three allegedly killed people. After their crimes, the government wants to force anti-psychotic medication to restore competency, convict them and sentence them to either life in prison or execution. It just doesn’t make sense to me. We cannot force them to take medication before they commit a crime, but we can force them to take medication after they commit a crime. I don’t understand why we can’t sentence individuals to a psychiatric facility for long-term treatment if they have been diagnosed with a delusional disorder and lack insight into their illness before they commit a serious crime. At least they would have the opportunity to recover a life and in some cases innocent individuals' lives would be saved.
