Troy Downing, who ran last year in the Republican U.S. Senate primary, announced Wednesday on the Montana Talks radio show that he's seeking the state auditor job in 2020.
Downing is the first person from either party to say they're running for auditor, one of the five statewide elected officials who sits on the Land Board.
The office will be open in 2020 because Auditor Matt Rosendale, a Republican, is making a bid for Montana's sole U.S. House seat. That is also an open office as incumbent U.S. Rep. Greg Gianforte is running for governor.
Downing is a businessman from Big Sky who spent eight years in the U.S. Air Force as an air force aviator and flight engineer. He came in third in the four-way GOP 2018 U.S. Senate primary, capturing 19% of the vote.
