A 36-year-old East Helena man was killed in a two-vehicle crash Sunday night.

Lewis and Clark County Sheriff/Coroner Leo Dutton identified the man as Derik Austin on Monday morning. Dutton confirmed the cause of death as blunt force trauma and classified the cause as an accident. Austin was not wearing a seat belt.

Austin was driving northbound at about 10:42 p.m. on Montana Avenue and attempted to make a left turn onto Mill Road in the Helena Valley. The driver of a second vehicle was traveling southbound on Montana Avenue and struck the first vehicle on the passenger side, according to the Montana Highway Patrol.

Austin was pronounced dead at St. Peter’s Health.

The driver of the southbound vehicle was also transported to the hospital for observation but was not injured.

Alcohol, drugs and speed were not listed as potential factors in the crash and no citations were believed to have been issued, according to Montana Highway Patrol dispatch.
