A jury trial for the Helena man accused of fatally shooting his hunting partner in Helena's old Kmart parking lot is scheduled for May 6, 2019.
On Wednesday, Gregg Robert Trude, 62, automatically entered a not guilty plea, which is standard during an arraignment.
Trude is charged with negligent homicide and tampering with physical evidence, both felonies. If convicted, Trude could face upwards of 30 years in the Montana State Prison.
Dr. Eugene "Buzz" Walton, 48, was shot with a hunting rifle in the old Kmart parking lot on Oct. 21, 2018. He and Trude had just returned from a hunting trip. Officials have not specified who owned the rifle or who was handling it when it was discharged.
First responders provided medical aid on the scene and then transported Walton to St. Peter's Health, where he died a short time later.
The Independent Record has filed a request for the police report that led to the charges against Trude and is currently awaiting a response.
