A 47-year-old Helena man has been charged with failure to register as a violent offender, a felony.
Brett Cleveland, also known as Brett Champoux, was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon in California in 1993, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in New Mexico in 2004, and aggravated battery against a household member in New Mexico in 2005, all of which require Cleveland to register as a violent offender.
On April 2, Cleveland was convicted of criminal endangerment in the Justice Court of Lewis and Clark County. As part of his sentence, Cleveland was ordered to register as a violent offender.

On May 14, Cleveland registered with the Helena Police Department as transient, requiring him to check in with the police every 30 days. He never did. He also failed to report to his probation officer.
Cleveland is being held at the Lewis and Clark County Detention Center. His bond is set at $40,000.
All charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
