A 15-year-old Missoula girl who was running from Shodair Children's Hospital was struck and killed by a vehicle on Interstate 15 Monday afternoon near Helena.
According to a statement from the mental health hospital, the girl broke the fire alarm, which caused the hospital locks to open. She then ran from the building and onto the interstate, where she was struck around 2:20 p.m. by a pickup truck driven by a 56-year-old Winston woman.
The girl died at the scene. Her cause of death was blunt force trauma, according to Lewis and Clark County Sheriff/Coroner Leo Dutton.
"Administration at Shodair is cooperating with officials and providing support to staff, patients and families," the statement from the hospital says. "Our condolences go out to the families impacted."
Officials said the death is still under investigation, and no citations have been issued.
