A 44-year-old Helena woman is accused of driving recklessly while under the influence of alcohol.
Katherine Laroy Thomas is being charged with a felony fourth DUI, felony criminal endangerment, misdemeanor obstructing a peace officer and misdemeanor fleeing from or eluding a peace officer.
On Thursday, a deputy was nearly hit by a car swerving while driving westbound on Highway 12. The deputy turned on their lights and sirens and the car, later discovered to be driven by Thomas, failed to stop and accelerated to speeds above 65 miles per hour.
At one point, Thomas stopped the car and a passenger got out and gave the deputy information about Thomas, including that she had been drinking.
More law enforcement officers located Thomas' car, eventually causing her to stop. She then attempted to walk away from officers and was detained, exhibiting glossy, bloodshot eyes and poor balance.
Thomas refused to give her name to law enforcement or complete a blood or breath test. She has three prior DUI convictions.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
