Helena man accused of leading deputy on high-speed chase

Robert Hubert Jefferson
A 34-year-old Helena man is accused of driving through Helena at 90 miles per hour on Thanksgiving.
Robert Hubert Jefferson is charged with felony criminal endangerment and misdemeanor fleeing or eluding a peace officer.
On Nov. 22, a deputy attempted to stop an SUV after the driver failed to stop at a stop sign. The driver did not slow down, but accelerated and drove in the opposing lane of traffic attempting to escape the deputy.
The driver of the vehicle shut his lights off and was passing traffic at 90 miles per hour in the wrong lane while the deputy was in pursuit, and went through a red light, nearly hitting other drivers.
The deputy stopped the pursuit, but a Montana Highway Patrol officer was able to take down the license plate and told the deputy the driver was a man. On Nov. 23, the deputy tracked the license plate and found the owner of the vehicle. The owner said that Jefferson had taken the vehicle the previous night while intoxicated and returned with it, telling the owner "there are sheriffs down the street," according to court documents.
The deputy found Jefferson at his residence hiding in the crawl space and placed him under arrest. Jefferson was taken to the Lewis and Clark County Detention Center.
All charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
