Authorities arrest man accused of armed robbery in Helena parking lot

UPDATE: This case has been completed.

Charge: Felony robbery.

Verdict: Dismissed by court.

Sentence: None.

Authorities have arrested a man accused of pointing a gun at another man's head, punching him in the eye and taking his cash and credit cards Wednesday in Helena.

The suspect, 29-year-old Matthew Adam Darnell, was arrested Thursday and charged with two counts of robbery or assault with a weapon.

An officer responded to a business in the 2700 block of Prospect Wednesday, where a witness described what had happened. The officer then searched a vehicle that the suspect was known to be a passenger in earlier that day, where a firearm was found.

Darnell told the officer he had pulled a BB gun on the victim, but later admitted that his fingerprints would be on the firearm found in the vehicle. Darnell also told the officer that he had been in a “fit of rage” and had blacked out during the incident, according to court documents.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
