An emotional – and sometimes heated – debate ended in the passage Tuesday of the nation’s most stringent anti-abortion law in the country.

Alabama’s law would make it a felony for a physician to perform an abortion, even if the conception occurred as the result of rape or incest. The only exception to allow for an abortion, according to the bill, would be if the health of the mother was at risk. The measure passed the House last week.

The bill now goes to Gov. Kay Ivey for her signature. If signed into law, the measure will trigger a wave of lawsuits backers hope will result in it being decided by the U.S. Supreme Court in an effort to overturn Roe v. Wade.
