Steve Carpenedo says goodbye to his daughter Harper Carpenedo on her first day of first grade at the newly constructed Central Elementary School building Wednesday. This was the first time Central School students were able to attend classes in their own downtown neighborhood since the former Central School building was evacuated on March 15, 2013, because of seismic safety concerns. Classes started Wednesday for grades first through sixth at Helena's elementary schools, grades 10-12 at Project for Alternative Learning, and ninth grade at Capital High and Helena High. Students in all other grades will start class Thursday.
