Gerald (Jerry) Duane Ohs

Sept. 27, 1939 – Jan. 7, 2019

Gerald (Jerry) Duane Ohs, age 79, went home to be with the Lord on January 7, 2019 after a year-long battle with Glioblastoma. Jerry was born in Malta, Montana on September 27, 1939 to Carl and Sylvia (Swanson) Ohs. He grew up on a ranch near Malta and then moved to Harrison/Pony in 1968 and ranched together with his family.

Jerry put his trust in Jesus at a young age, and his faith directed the course of his life and gave him purpose throughout its many stages. Jerry was a tall man with big hands that could fix just about everything. Those hands turned to many different kinds of work including: inventor, farmer/rancher, mechanic, missionary, carpenter, pilot (helicopter/airplane), captain, singer, cowboy, horseman, hydro-electric owner/operator, chairman of multiple boards, veteran, firefighter, faithful friend, fun grandpa, loving husband and father who led by example. It was his big heart that left an impression on whoever he touched and it seemed as though he knew just about everyone. His face with smiling wrinkles and a twinkle in his eye made it easy for him to make a lasting impression. An engulfing handshake didn’t hurt either.

He was most proud of his work in developing a transportable round mold for the bio-sand filter which is now used to provide clean and life saving water for families all over the world. His design greatly decreased the cost and weight of the original steel mold. He loved teaching others how to build them in countries including China, Peru, Philippines, Australia, Mexico, Indonesia, and many in Africa.
