Morris John Pietz, 80, passed away June 24, 2013, at St. Peter’s Hospital after a lengthy illness. Morris was born Oct. 6, 1932, in Huntley to John and Elizabeth Pietz. After graduation, he honed his carpentry skills in Anchorage, Ala., for a time before serving in the U.S. Army, where he excelled in marksmanship and was an honorably discharged Master Sergeant.
Morris married Bertha Mergenthaler of East Helena on Nov. 22, 1953, and they made East Helena their home. Morris was employed by ASARCO for 40-plus years and retired in 1996 as chief settlement clerk and paymaster. He loved fishing and working with wood. Several projects in the area benefited from his assistance, and it seemed like he was always looking for something that needed fixing up!!
Morris is survived by his loving wife, Bertha; sons Jeffrey and Philip; daughters, Vicki (William) Morris and Valerie (Thad) Miguez; and grandchildren Angie Herbst and Joshua Morris. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Larry; son, Brett Pietz; and grandson Jeremy Pietz.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service for Morris is scheduled for 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 2, at the Plymouth Congregational Church, 400 S. Oaks, Helena. Memorials in Morris’ name are suggested to the Lewis and Clark Humane Society.
