Gertrude F. “Trude” MacDonald

March 13, 1923 – Sept. 13, 2019

Gertrude “Trude” MacDonald , age 96, passed away peacefully September 13, 2019. She has lived in Helena since 1956.

Trude was born & grew up in Vienna, Austria March 13, 1923. She was a ballerina in the Viennese State Opera Ballet Company. Her entire family was involved in dancing in the State Opera. She met her husband John N. “Mac” MacDonald while he was stationed in Vienna at the end of WWII. They married in 1949 and she moved with him to Ft. Worth, Texas. She quickly learned to speak English beautifully. She still has a tiny bit of an accent, which sounds so pretty.

Both her children (Martha & Michael) were born in Ft. Worth, Texas.. They soon moved to Mac’s next duty station in Yokohama, Japan. They lived there for two years. While in Japan she joined a woman’s shooting club through the Army and was quickly named Annie Oakley because of her accuracy. She also learned to cook wonderful Japanese food.

In 1956 the family moved to Helena, Montana where she has lived ever since. When she first moved to Helena she taught dance classes with Blanche Judge and then with Jane Brown. She opened her own dance school on Park Avenue in the basement of the YWCA. Because of the dance studio, she met many people, their children or grandchildren who took ballet, tap, acrobatics, social dance and so on. She nurtured many blooming dancers over the years. She was one of the founding members of the Dance Masters of America’s Montana Chapter and served on the board for many years.

After retiring from her dance school she became a board member for the Community Concert programs. She also taught line dance classes part time at the Senior Center.

She frequently says that she is intoxicated by music. If you watch her during musical events, she will be tapping her feet or moving in place to the music.

Trude’s son, Michael (& wife Jane) have given her a beautiful Granddaughter and handsome Grandson. She is now also the proud Great Grandmother of two precious “Little Ladies” born in 2012 & 2015.
