Sandy went home with the Lord on January 1, 2017. Sandy was born March 3, 1943 in Washington, D.C. to Walter M. Hummel and Erma “Babe” Leyde Hummel. She graduated from Hilltop High School, Chula Vista, CA. In 1961, she attended one semester at Southwestern College. She left to go into the U.S. Navy from March 1962 to March 1965, working in payroll accounting. Sandy returned to California and worked in banking and moved to Kankakee, IL, also working in accounting about three years. She returned to Chula Vista and worked for Sweetwater Union High School District about five years, leaving there to return to Southwestern College. Sandy went to Montana in 1976 for a visit and decided to stay. In Montana, Sandy worked at Gough, Shanahan, Johnson & Waterman, Anderson, ZurMuehlen, and the Masonic Home. Sandy is survived by her husband of 39 years, Walter Thomas Ballard; son, Walter Thomas Ballard, Jr. (wife Holly Noelle Woodward); brother, Robert “Bob” Hummel of Chula Vista, CA; step daughters Kay Marie Ballard (Jim Mallard) of Elliston, MT and Peggy Ballard of Jefferson City, MT; sister in law, Gaye Hummel; and nephew David Hummel of Yuma, AZ. Also, seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren acquired by marriage to husband Tom. Sandy is preceded in death by her parents, Walter M. Hummel and Erma Hummel; brother, Walter W. “Buster” Hummel; step son, Kirby Dale Ballard; step daughter, Sue Ann Melle; and step grandson Brandon Haas. Sandy was a long-time member of Clancy United Methodist Church and considers them as her extended family.
