I applaud the Independent Record editorial board for their opinion in the paper of 10/13, as I agree that the loss of five out of seven department heads over the last eight months from city employment does indeed indicate a problem inside the city created by the city commission and city manager.
In addition to the department heads, the city has also lost four out of seven employees from budget and finance which will hamper, if not restrict, the city from appropriately managing the city budget and will definitely impact and/or delay the reports that need to be sent to the state of Montana and the city financial audit.
There are other employees that have left the city, most recently two golf pros at Bill Roberts Golf Course. Some of the employees that have left found other jobs. Others took early retirement. The city commission and city manager created an environment with their management style, which to say the least, has created a great deal of tension and trepidation inside the city and now all these employees are leaving. The city of Helena has not seen the departure of this many department heads, other management employees and budget personnel in the last 20 years combined.
The management personnel remaining are working in an environment that is not compatible with the ability to provide good customer service to the very citizens that pay city taxes.
As the IR editorial board has pointed out, this is not the only problem the city commission and city manager have created.
I believe that the only way to end the exiting of more of the city of Helena’s most valuable assets, its employees, is to elect two new city commissioners.
