New school board trustees Libby Goldes, left, and Siobhan Hatthorn

Recently elected school board trustees Libby Goldes, left, and Siobhan Hathhorn take the oath of office Tuesday night at the Ray Bjork Learning Center.

The Helena Public Schools Board of Trustees underwent a makeover with Tuesday's swearing-in of trustees elected last week.

Helena voters elected Elizabeth "Libby" Goldes, John H. McEwen and Siobhan Hathhorn to the board last Tuesday. Only McEwen and the 12-year incumbent Goldes appeared on the ballot; Hathhorn took nearly 47 percent of the write-in vote, according to results released Monday by the Lewis and Clark County elections department. McEwen was absent from Tuesday’s meeting.

Outgoing board chair Sarah Sullivan acknowledged departing board members Tyler Emmert and Sanjay Talwani for their service, singling out Emmert for his prowess handling budget issues and Talwani for his policy-making skills.

“They were both really wonderful members of the board and contributed a lot and we really appreciate their service,” Sullivan said.

Per a motion from Goldes, the board voted unanimously to re-elect Terry Beaver as board vice chair, while Sullivan stepped aside to allow Luke Muszkiewicz to become board chair.

Muszkiewicz thanked Sullivan for her mentorship, remarking that he’ll “miss saying 'Madam Chair Sullivan,'” and Beaver for serving as vice chair once again.

"I would not be doing this if I didn't have somebody with such experience and integrity serving that role," Muszkiewicz said.
