Applications are being accepted for a revamped Tourism Business Improvement District grant to help fund events in Helena. 

This grant program started in 2013 and has provided more than $60,000 in funding assistance for local events and projects. Funding is available for sporting events, tournaments, music festivals, outdoor recreation and more. Supporting these kinds of events is a way to invest funding back into the community for the Helena Tourism Alliance. 

Any nonprofit or for-profit organizations, individuals or businesses who have a new or existing event idea and matching grant funds are eligible to apply. Grant applications can be for cultural, historical, educational or sporting events. Applications go through a review process and are voted on by the TBID board of directors.

There are several deadlines based on when the event is being held.

Jan. 31 is the deadline for existing events held in May or throughout the summer. June 30 is the deadline for existing events held in October or throughout the winter. 

Applications for new events must be submitted 90 days prior to the planned event date. 

The grant funding is made available through the support of the TBID lodging partners. Guests are assessed at a rate of $2 per night, per room, and that money is reinvested into the promotion and marketing of Helena tourism. 

The grant program is designed to attract and grow new and existing events that boost overnight visits to Helena. This in turn boosts occupancy for local lodging facilities, such as hotels. The HTA also says this benefits local retailers, restaurants and tourism attractions.
