Sign on the door of Helena Industries Thrift Store fire

A sign notifies customers of a Thursday night fire at the Helena Industries Thrift Store.

A fire that has forced Helena Industries to temporarily close its thrift store started in a freight elevator Thursday night, the organization says.

Lt. Mike McDaniel of the Helena Fire Department said firefighters found flames coming through the roof of the building on the corner of Last Chance Gulch and Montana Avenue when they arrived shortly after 9:15 p.m. Thursday.

Firefighters forced entry into the second floor of the building, where they found a fire working its way through the attic. McDaniel said the firefighters carried out “an aggressive interior attack” to quell the flames, and the fire was under control at 9:43 p.m.

The building was not occupied at the time of the fire.

The roof of the building sustained significant damage, currently estimated at $300,000.

It is not considered suspicious and an investigation is ongoing.
