7th ave parking

If a proposal by Helena Public Schools is approved by the City of Helena, the north side of 7th Avenue will have back-in parking for teachers.

The Helena city commission approved a proposal recently that will see part of 7th Avenue near Central Elementary School turned into a one-way street.

The proposal was put forth by Helena Public Schools in an effort to better facilitate bus flow around the school and provide more parking spaces for teachers. A public meeting was held in July where residents of the central neighborhood could voice their concerns about the proposal.

In just a few weeks, 7th Avenue between North Warren Street and Cruse Avenue will be turned into a one-way directing traffic west to Cruse. City officials said the goal is to have the project complete by the time school starts, Aug. 28.

Kali Kind, facilities director for the school district, said the district's portion of the work will be to handle painting and striping for the new parking area. The city will be responsible for handling signage.

The city expects that this project will result in better overall traffic flow as Central returns to its historical location in the busy downtown area.
