Authorities have determined that the Helena man found dead in Canyon Ferry Reservoir in August accidentally drowned.

According to Lewis and Clark County Sheriff/Coroner Leo Dutton, “drugs and alcohol were definitely a factor.”

A fisherman in a canoe found the body of 57-year-old Murray Fladeland floating in a small cove between the Chalet day use area and the Fish Hawk campground, Dutton said. Fladeland had camping and fishing gear in a camp set up at Fish Hawk and a car parked at the campground.

The evidence suggests Fladeland was climbing a sharp bank when he lost his footing and tumbled into the water, Dutton said.

"We couldn't find any signs of foul play," he said.
