Each year, come late August, a unique excitement builds as a new school year approaches. Just as we do on January 1st, a new school year promises untold opportunities, challenges and surprises. Over the next ten months, there will be victories, losses, triumphs and defeats. Each opportunity promises growth as our students develop into the leaders of tomorrow.
Nearly two-and-a-half years after passing a $63 million bond, Helena has opened new school buildings for the first time in more than 40 years.
On March 15, 2013, Central School was moved from its home neighborhood on Warren Street and relocated to Lincoln School and Helena Middle School due to structural concerns. The relocation was upsetting for staff and students because they found themselves in new settings for the remainder of the school year. The following year the students and staff were temporarily relocated to Lincoln School where they remained for five years. These relocations were also a loss for the Central neighborhood and downtown Helena. The sounds of children at recess, laughter as children walked to school and the daily ringing of bells were silenced.
