Canyon Drive death

Billings police investigate the scene of a shooting death on the 2100 block of Canyon Drive Wednesday afternoon.

An Anaconda man has been identified by Yellowstone County officials as the shooting victim in a suspected homicide in Billings last week.

John Smathers, 25, died at the scene of the Nov. 21 shooting from a gunshot wound, assistant coroner Richard Hoffman said Monday morning.

Hoffman declined to say how many times Smathers was shot or where he sustained his injuries, referring requests for additional details to the Billings Police Department, which is investigating the incident as a homicide. A police department spokesman did not immediately return a phone call Monday.

Smathers had previously worked as a concrete mason and was employed by Sletten Construction Co., according to an obituary published Monday in the Montana Standard.

Another man had been hospitalized with gunshot wounds following the shooting, according to BPD. Hoffman said he had not been notified of any additional deaths resulting from the shooting, and police have not provided any new information on the man’s condition.

No arrests had been made immediately after the shooting, according to BPD.
