The two Helena teenagers detained in connection with a suspected arson fire Tuesday at the 7th Avenue Gymnasium appeared in court via teleconference Wednesday.
One of the boys is accused of criminal trespassing, obstructing a police officer and accountability to criminal mischief. The other faces accusations of arson, burglary, obstructing a police officer and criminal mischief.
The two boys, ages 14 and 15, are being held in the Great Falls Juvenile Detention Center.
A resident called the Helena Police Department Tuesday night to report two juveniles breaking into the unused gym, which is on the campus of the now-demolished Central School.
Police found that a window had been broken with a rock, which is where the two boys allegedly entered the building. The boys attempted to run after police flushed them out of the building, but both were apprehended.
Firefighters with the Helena Fire Department discovered that the significant amount of smoke in the building was coming from a garbage can on fire in the basement. The damage to the building is currently expected to be greater than $1,500.
One boy has admitted to being in the building, breaking windows and lighting the fire.
