A transient registered sex offender is jailed on a felony charge of aggravated driving under the influence.
Police say 65-year-old Robert John Eklund was injured when he crashed into another vehicle on Bozeman Avenue before striking a utility box Monday afternoon. Authorities say he was intoxicated at the time, according to court documents.
Medical personnel tending to Eklund's injuries noted he smelled of alcohol. Court documents state Eklund admitted to drinking but refused to submit to a breath or blood test.
Six hours following the crash and after Eklund's release from the hospital, he showed several indicators of impairment, the documents note.
Eklund, 65, is facing his fifth DUI conviction. He also is accused of driving on a suspended or revoked license and not having insurance.
Eklund has been convicted of raping a 13-year-old girl.
