A 23-year-old Helena man is accused of strangling his partner and preventing her from calling police.
Cody Justin Wells is being charged with strangulation of a partner or family member and tampering with a communication device.
Helena police officers responded to a call in the early afternoon of Dec. 28 to investigate a possible assault.
When officers arrived at the scene they made contact with the man's partner, who said Wells had punched, slapped, strangled and kicked her, according to court documents.
An officer noted several marks on the partner’s neck area and bruising and scratching on her left elbow and back, along with damage to a wall where she said she had been thrown by Wells, according to court documents.
The partner said Wells was bigger and stronger than her, so while she had tried to defend herself, it was difficult. The partner also said this was not the first time Wells had assaulted her, but this was the first time she had contacted law enforcement, according to court documents.
When the partner tried to contact law enforcement, Wells took the phone, placed it on airplane mode and locked it in the bedroom, according to court documents.
Wells met officers at the Lewis and Clark County Courthouse and was later placed under arrest.
