A Helena man was arrested Tuesday and charged with choking his significant other.

According to court documents, David Edward Neill, 29, was charged on Wednesday with felony strangulation of a partner or family member, misdemeanor partner or family member assault and misdemeanor assault.

Helena police officers arrived at the 800 block of North Montana Avenue for a domestic disturbance late Tuesday morning and found Neill and his partner involved in a verbal argument, court documents say. Neill’s partner allegedly had a visible forearm injury.

Another witness had reportedly intervened in the altercation to stop further harm to Neill’s partner and was then punched by Neill, causing visible injuries to the witness, according to court documents.

In a statement to the police officer, Neill’s partner said she had been strangled by Neill as well as grabbed on the arm.

Neill has one prior partner or family assault conviction, according to court documentation.
