The American Business Women’s Association and Soroptomists of Helena join the YWCA each year in honoring women from the Helena area that have made an impact on the community.
The recipients were each surprised Friday with the news and will be presented with their award at the annual Salute to Women luncheon held March 14.
Mary Rutherford received the 2019 Woman of the Year award and Marcia Wall received the 2019 Woman of Achievement award.
Rutherford is president and CEO of the Montana Community Foundation and has created opportunities for female students from diverse backgrounds to overcome adversity and gain access to higher education through scholarship programs. As an employer and supervisor, Rutherford promotes, empowers, and mentors women staff.
She has grown the Women’s Foundation of Montana to improve the economic security of women and girls across the state, is an active member of the Helena Rotary Club, serves on numerous local, state, and national boards, and believes strongly that we are all stronger when we work together.
Wall was a counselor at Helena Middle School, providing field trip cash, winter coats and shoes to students during her time there. In 1989, she founded the Angel Fund, a nonprofit dedicated to helping Helena School District students who qualify for free or reduced lunch with clothing, winter outerwear, school supplies, shoes and other needed items.
The Angel Fund helps some 800 students now with a $148,000 budget, according to its board of directors. The Angel Fund also runs Stuff the Bus, a Helena-area fundraiser that brings school supplies to students around Helena.
This year’s luncheon will be held March 14 at the Great Northern Hotel. For more details on this, visit www.salutetowomen.net.
