Thirty-eight years ago, Capital High linebacker Kurt Keith
intercepted a pair of Bengal passes - the first a Pick-6
of 39-yards for the deciding score - and had a long pass
deflection, as CHS’ gridders claimed the 1982 crosstown
victory 19-7. Also scoring for the Bruins was quarterback
John Harrington, on runs of 1- and 7-yards. Mike Stanger
rushed for 173 yards on 24 carries (7.2 avg), while
Harrington completed 6 of 9 passes for 90 yards.
Kelly Quinn posted the brown-and-gold’s third interception;
and the D-line (Jon Saunders, Steve Thennis, Lee Evans,
Mike Maykuth) limited HHS to 29-yards rushing. Helena’s
lone tally was set-up by defensive end Bill Bossler’s
interception, when QB Dave Miller connected on passes
to Joe Sternhagen and Charlie Carson (twice), followed
by Jim Lindquist’s 9-yard sprint to pay-dirt. Miller was
15-for-34 and 189 yards, with Carson catching a
school record-tying nine receptions for 104 yards. HHS’
defensive standouts included Kevin Cloud, Dave Carson,
Chris Kanthack and Mark Robertson.
