Joe Epler Present LOOKING BACK By Curt wwSynness Fifty-one years ago, after the 1968 local prep football season had concluded, Helena Central High edged Butte Central 23-19 in a scrimmage between the following year’s players (no seniors) at the Cougars’ field, now known as Tuss Field. The match-up was arranged between HCHS coach Cecil “Jim” Deming and Maroons’ mentor Bob “Putter” Petrino, and although not sanctioned, the tilt was refereed by grid officials. After a touchdown by the Cougars’ Larry Pfeiffer and a field goal by Joe “The Toe” Kiely, Helena’s winning Rick Pyfer TD - which was scored by either Ed Miller or John Marcinek - was set up by a long pass from quarterback Rick Pyfer to Mike “Hands” Van Diest. “After the game, my Dad came up to me and said, ‘Wasn’t that a great catch by Brad (Luck)?’” Mike related. “So I told him, ‘Dad, I caught that ball!” The next spring, Helena Central closed its’ doors and combined with Helena High later that fall, while Butte Central went on to capture the 1969 Class A championship. 716 Touchstone Dr. This won’t last long!
