LOOKING BACK
By Curt Synness
Thirty years ago, three local AA football players
signed to play for Western Montana College,
including Capital High’s Kyle Mihelish and
Mark Olson, and Helena’s Mike Flaherty. Mihelish,
a 5’9”, 165-pound defensive
back, was described by Bulldog
coach Mick Dennehy as “one
of the top cornerbacks in Class
AA football this past fall (1989).
Kyle’s a great cover man who
played a very similar defense
in high school as we do at
Western.” Other Bruin alums
who joined Mihelish at Western
Kyle Mihelish
were Dan Farnam, Dan Olson,
Casey Lyndes and James Sheridan. After
red-shirting, Kyle played four seasons for the
‘Dawgs, highlighted by his two interceptions
against Minot State his senior year, when he was
named the Frontier’s Defensive Player of the Week
in 1994. Mihelish, CHS’ fifth-year head grid coach,
was also a standout prep swimmer. He garnered
a pair of All-State medals in the 100 backstroke
for the brown-and-gold at the State Swim Meets,
placing fifth in 1989 (59.26) and sixth as a senior.

Happy Thanksgiving!
