Joe Epler Present LOOKING BACK By Curt Synness Fifty-two years ago, this week, the 1967 Helena Legion baseball team (they were named the Senators the next season) held a slim 1-0 lead over Mandan after six innings of play, on their road trip through North Dakota. The Capital City’s first run was tallied in the third frame, on centerfielder Neil Horne’s sacrifice fly, plating shortstop Kirk Johnson. Horne singled to start the two-run Helena seventh, and with one out, Neil stole second base and Bob Knudson then raced home with the deciding run on catcher Reggie Volies’ single to center. After Mike Cottingham reached on an error, third baseman Bob Knudson followed with an RBI single to right for an insurance marker. Horne and Knudson led the offense with two base knocks apiece, while Kirk Johnson and Bob Marcinek chipped in with a double and a single. Jerry Rickman pitched the complete-game win, scattering 10 hits in the 3-1 victory. 1030 Prairie Road, Helena Clean home with great space and room to grow!
