Steve Celar was a 9-time Montana Open Wheel
Racing Association Sprint Car state champion.
Steve started out with drag racing for five years in
the late 1970s. He switched to Super Stock for four
seasons, winning three Stock Car Racing Association
of Montana titles and the Capital
City SCRA track championship at
Thunder Road Speedway twice. In
1988, he burst onto the state’s 360
Sprint Car class driving “Mac Attack,”
by sweeping the Magic City Sprint
Classic, winning his heat, trophy
dash, match race and main event,
and went on to capture his first Steve Celar
MOWRA high-points championship. Celar retained his
title the next year, with a season finale performance at
the Dan Laber Memorial Sprint Challenge, winning the
heat and trophy dash, placing runner-up in the match
race and taking third in the 35-lap feature event.
He clinched the three-peat in 1990, earning the
A Main victories both nights of the Laber Memorial. In
1994, racing a new car tweaked by head mechanics
Charlie Blanchard and Jim Stanger, he ran his state
titles win streak to seven in a row, capturing both the
MOWRA season high-points crown, and the Montana
Sprint Car Summer Nationals. At the 1995 California
Tour at Capital City Speedway, the 43-year old Celar
swept the Wild West 360s heat, match, sprint and
main races. In 2004, Steve’s racing suit was put on
display at the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, in
Knoxville, Tennessee.
